He Smiled Like An Angel

(From 2009 cd ASCEND - words & music by Laurie McClain)
I wrote this song about my brother, Danny, who left this earth in 1995 at the age of 40. Daniel, my brother, you are no longer older than me...
I saw my brother coming up the hill
in a grey t-shirt and blue jeans
backpack strapped across his back
I said Oh my God, Danny
are you ok?
and he smiled like an angel
and he said I’m fine
he smiled like an angel
and I started to cry
he smiled like an angel
and I knew he was all right

Danny was always a troubled child
he was a genius and he was wild
he was an artist
he could draw anything
but he shined the brightest
at the piano keys

Bullies seemed to have radar for him
I guess they could sense
he just couldn’t be mean
and he fell hard
for a few sweet girls
and then drove them away
with his intensity

but he smiled like an angel
in my dream last night
he smiled like an angel
with light in his eyes
he smiled like an angel
and I knew he was all right

and I told him
Mom’s hurting so bad
could you please give her a sign

then I woke up and I called our mom
and I told her about my dream
and we cried together
with 700 miles in between

and I said
Oh, Mom, I really believe
it was just what it seemed
‘cause he smiled like an angel
wish you could have seen
he smiled like an angel
it was more than a dream
he smiled like an angel
and I knew he’d finally found peace
